Sarah and Marcus’s soft lavender themed wedding in Knoxville at Castleton Farms is beyond! The level of attention to detail and the commitment to Sarah’s vision for her day is outstanding! What’s more inspirational is the love between them that fills the atmosphere of this extraordinary day! I can go on and on about this wedding, but I’ll let the bride take over! Enjoy!

How did you meet?

Sarah: “We had intermittently but uneventfully encountered each other socially over the years in our small but enthusiastic Knoxville community.”

When did you know you were falling in love?

“Although Marcus’s intent was to only be a ‘friend’ from the start. The moment I met him I had already realized that I was truly in love with him. I was forced to make a decision –– if true love is unconditional and non-possessive, and if I truly loved him and was not merely infatuated with this dark, handsome, motorcycle-riding, leather-jacket-wearing ‘bad boy with heart’, then I should be able to do so as only a friend and be grateful for any amount of himself he would be willing to share with me.

So you can imagine my gleeful self-satisfaction in the ironic outcome. I naturally didn’t expect that he would do anything other than ‘definitely never date’ me, and I certainly didn’t expect that he would in fact date me for another 3 years, and I most certainly of all didn’t expect that he would in fact get down on one knee against the dusky purple backdrop of sunset atop a brisk and breezy 360-degree mountain and present me with the same diamond given to my mother by my late father.”

What is your favorite quality in your husband?

“Marcus always is the first one to resolve any conflicts. He has a heart for people and is always willing to go the extra mile.”

Did you have a specific theme or design inspiration for your big day?

“I wanted very much to portray that warm and organic world that looks like John Anster Christian Fitzgerald meets William Morris meets Art Nouveau –– pure, bright, regal, delicate and botanical, and yet also strong, wild and fierce. No fantastical setting has ever impacted me like Peter Jackson’s depiction of Lothlórien, the land of the Elves. Flawless and angelic beings of supernatural beauty climbing delicately crafted spires of milky white wrapping everything in a bright majestic gauze of light.”

How about your dress or attire?

“The main colors were actually derived from the dress my mother and I found at David’s Bridal. I did not expect to find anything unique or relevant enough to the aesthetic I was trying to create at what to me seemed to be an exclusively ‘bridal’ boutique. But there was no harm in humoring my practical and proactive mother, if for no other reason except to make some special memories and spend some time together.

However, after trying on only a remarkably concise lineup of 3 dresses, I knew with certainty as I admired the delicately appliqued plunging sweetheart neckline, tapering ethereal tulle shoulder straps, and dusty pastel embroidery that it was an undeniably perfect fit. And of course my mom teared up a little at the sight of her last and youngest daughter in such a perfectly beautiful wedding gown. Anyway, since the colors of the dress were breathless soft lavender tints and icy greens, I wanted to balance that delicate sweetness with stronger lavender and sturdier pine to highlight other directions taken with wild woodland themes. I wanted everything to be fresh and fragrant and botanical.”

What traditions did you incorporate?

“Handfasting – The term presumably loans into English formal old Norse ‘handfesta’ ‘to strike a bargain by joining hands.’ It is a rural folkloric custom, initially found in western European countries. I liked the tangible visual representation of our union afforded by the tying of our hands together with beautiful ribbons, and allowed for one more authentic detail to bring everyone into another time and place one more time.”

What was the most memorable moment?

“The most memorable moment was our first glance. Marcus had his back to me and I tapped him on the shoulder, the look on his face when he turned around told me in that moment he loved me more than anything. He said ‘You couldn’t take this out of my head if you tried.” We had some time together just he and I before the big day began.”

What was your first dance song, and why did you choose it?

“‘Never Going to Love You’ by Band of Horses. We picked this song because we have special memories listening to that song together. The actual song is kind of sad but the chorus is what stands out.”
