Your wedding cake is the centerpiece of your reception.

That tower of yummy goodness is not just a thing of beauty to consume, though – it’s a fabulous opportunity to showcase your personal style and aid in branding your wedding. While some brides see the cake topper as little more than an afterthought, I’m of the mindset that every detail counts when you’re designing a wedding. So without further ado, here are five simple steps to deciding on the perfect cake topper for your big day!

  1. Do you want to say something with your wedding cake topper, or do you want something more traditional?

Many modern cake toppers are actually made up of words, rather than a traditional monogram or bride and groom. I’m a huge fan of either, but I have to say the more modern ones with words have a special place in my heart.

  1. Will your wedding cake seem overdone with a cake topper?

Don’t forget that a simple spray of fresh flowers on the top of the cake can give just the right touch without taking away from the overall design. Another alternative is a simple (yet oh-so-fun) silhouette wedding cake topper. I love these! They easily go with any theme.

  1. Do you want to set the topper up after your big day?

Some toppers don’t have a solid base beneath them, so if you have your heart set on displaying one after the big day, keep in mind that you’ll have to purchase a base for it. Or, just be sure to buy a cake topper with one already “built in.”

  1. Will the cake topper you have your heart set on complement – or hurt – your wedding theme?

I’m talking about branding your event again here. Always keep the big picture in mind while planning your wedding’s overall design, and never say yes to a detail that’ll diminish your theme. It may seem like a small compromise at the moment, but it’ll stick out like a sore thumb on the big day if you do.

  1. Are you wanting trendy or timeless?

While this ties nicely into #4, I’m always a fan of opting for timeless details at weddings. If you want your cake topper to be eligible for heirloom status one day when your children marry, you should be too! Only opt for something you love because it’s YOU – not just because everyone else loves it.
