If there’s one thing we love about our real weddings, it is that each and every one is so uniquely fit for the couple. Which is exactly what a wedding day should be, right?! Well, Sarah & Derrick’s big day is no different. They made sure to skirt the line between elegant & rustic which fit Sarah to a T, and to incorporate a sweet nod to Derrick’s military service. We could go on and on about how much we love this wedding and how sweet the couple is, but we’ll let you find out for yourself with the bride herself below!
How did you meet?
“We actually went to high school together, but I don’t remember him from there. He’s two years younger. He remembers me, but I don’t remember him. We reconnected through Facebook when he came back from the service. We both commented on the same Facebook post and I saw his face and kind of loved it. So I checked out his profile and it was obvious he was single and it didn’t appear he was crazy. So I sent him a friend request which he immediately accepted and then he messaged me for a date.”
When did you know you were falling in love?
“I knew I was falling for him the first time I took him to meet my family. He fit right in and got along with them so well, it was like he was meant to be there. He says he knew he was falling in love with me the first time he saw me interact with his son. Gabriel took to me right away and there was never any awkwardness.”
What is your favorite quality in your spouse?
“My favorite quality in him is his boldness. He’s not scared to try anything. He makes me feel brave (and that’s kind of a big deal because I am a scaredy girl). And his sense of humor, he can always make me laugh. He says his favorite quality in me is my kind heart and the way I love him.”
What traditions did you incorporate?
“We did a few special things. We had a special cupcake and sang happy birthday to my grandmother because our wedding date was her birthday. Also I made sure we incorporated the American flag into our pics and video because Derrick is a veteran, 12 years in the Air Force and 4 tours overseas. He doesn’t talk about it much but I am so proud of him and what he went through so we could be free to live our lives. I know the flag means a lot to him because he fought for it and that makes him worthy of honor. Even in this small way.”
Did you have a specific theme or design inspiration for your big day?
“I really didn’t have a name for my theme. I just knew that I wanted to skirt the line between rustic and elegant. Between hard and soft. Rugged and pretty. It’s kind of always been my thing.”
How about your dress or attire?
“My dress was to die for. Not at all the type address I thought I would pick, because it was so fitted! I really thought I would go for something flowey But when I put this dress on… it was done. The choice was made. I went with my mom and my maid of honor on a Saturday, we booked three appointments at three different dress shops, and I found my dress at the first one. The fourth dress I tried on. Needless to say we canceled the other two appointments!”
What was your first dance song, and why did you choose it?
“Our first dance was to ‘Always Remember Us This Way’ by Lady Gaga. It was the perfect song for us because of the passion it brings and how true the lyrics our to our love. He says his favorite line is…’You found the light in me that I couldn’t find’ (he says I found the light). And my favorite line is ‘When you look at me and the whole world fades’ (well, because it does).”
What was the most memorable moment?
“The most memorable moment of our wedding day was the last dance. We were totally alone in the barn while everyone else was outside getting ready for our exit. We danced and sang to each other ‘Ashes’ by Celine Dion. It was so smokin’ hot even the videographer’s assistant said, ‘Shoot, I need to get a girlfriend’ when it was done. We literally forgot anyone else was there and just got lost in the moment. It was magical. A close second would be my first dance with my dad….there were tears, there were laughs, there was a whole lot of pride and love between me and my papa.”
Tell us about your grand exit!
“We had a beautiful sparkler escape out the back of the barn and onto the patio. Some of the guests had gone but the ones that hang in there made a beautiful sparkly tunnel for us.”
Congratulations Sarah & Derrick!
