Having trouble finding that impeccable song that will fit you and your groom perfectly as you dance your first dance together as a married couple at your wedding reception? In the latest installment of our First Dance Songs series, we’ve highlighted five songs from artists of today to help you in your search!
1. “So High”
If you’re looking for a first dance song by John Legend, you’ll have loads of options! The man’s voice is pure magic. Combined with the beautiful lyrics that seem to be a part of so many of his tunes, you can’t go wrong with one of his masterpieces for your wedding. This song is one of the singles from Legend’s first album, Get Lifted.
You and your groom will love swaying to this R&B jam at your wedding reception! With its lyrics all about the amazing heights of happiness that being crazy-in-love can take you and Legend’s soulful vocals, your first dance will be a highlight of the reception for both the newly married couple and the guests.
2. “Kiss Me”
First off, I think Ed Sheeran is just adorable with that red hair and lovely British accent of his. Beyond that, though, he has an incredible talent for songwriting. Not even 22 years old, this artist already has a Grammy nomination under his belt too!
This simple song with its romantic, heartfelt lyrics would be perfect for a first dance – whether it’s done in its original studio-recorded style or you prefer more of a stripped-down acoustic version. Even if you have a large number of guests attending your wedding, you’re sure to forget about everyone else but your new groom once this songs begins to play.
If you and your groom are in the mood for a quirky tune for your first dance, try this fun one by Regina Spektor. Spektor’s songs are known for displaying her fabulous piano and vocal skills, but this one also features the use of a string quartet.
This song won’t be for the couple desiring a traditional number as the song choice for their reception. However, its upbeat tempo and adventurous lyrics will definitely make it a first dance to remember!
The artist of this song, MIKA, is a British singer-songwriter whose fun pop/pop-rock style and songs range from the goofy, let-loose kind to the ones of a more serious nature. Although he’s not as well-known here as he is across the pond, if you’re in the mood for a first dance song with both style AND substance, checking out MIKA is a fine place to start.
Although this song is more about the feelings one has when starting to fall in love, (and hopefully you and your groom are already there if you’ve already made it to the first dance at your wedding reception), that same excitement for what the future will bring for a relationship is also very much present at the beginning of a marriage.
5. “You and I”
Ingrid Michaelson, a New York-based singer-songwriter, is known for her independence as an artist and for never signing with a major record label – even though she’s achieved quite a bit of popularity since appearing on the music scene.
This sweet, ukelele-filled song features Michaelson’s producer from her Be OK album, Dan Romer. You and your groom will love the song’s message about finding somebody who is your perfect complement and making plans for all the amazing things you want to accomplish together.
Hopefully one of these songs is a great match for you and your groom for the first dance at your wedding – or at least give you a little inspiration to find that perfect tune! Be sure to check out previous installments of our First Dance Songs series here for even more ideas.
