Imagine this: You and your new hubby arrive blissfully to your honeymoon destination after a long day of traveling…all to find out that your luggage did not. Would this fact cause your whole honeymoon to derail from the beginning?
If you’re an inexperienced traveler like I was on my honeymoon, chances are it just might. That is, unless you know how to pack a rock-solid carry-on bag that stays with you every step of the way, ensuring that you’re never without the essentials needed to keep the biggest and most blissful vacation of your life on track if the unthinkable happens. Packing a great carry-on bag will also help you avoid having commonly overlooked or forgotten items dampen your newlywed bliss!
If you’ve traveled before, you already know the importance of a carry-on bag. Luckily, I was able to catch veteran travel agent Martie Watson of premier Memphis area travel agency Travel Leaders to discover what all you need within that ever-important piece of luggage. Read on for her amazing commentary!
1. Make sure you pack changes of clothes in your carry-on bag.
Pack a few changes of clothes, a bathing suit, extra underwear, and pajamas. Also, if you’re going to an all-inclusive resort or have reservations at a nice restaurant with suggested dress codes, pack a nice dress or dressier clothes to wear!
2. Always travel with your valuables close to you.
“You don’t really know who all will be checking your luggage behind the scenes,” Martie details. I totally agree! This includes everything from your camera to your jewelry. Just don’t risk it…keep it with you! Martie went on to suggest even separating your camera from your memory card while traveling, just to make sure that if the camera gets lost or stolen, you’ll still have those irreplaceable memories. I simply love that advice. This also includes money! Keep it on you at all times, but never keep it in one place (spread it around). Also be mindful of regulations for metal items that may trigger the full-body scanners, like your shoes, belt, keys, and even money. Take these off of you before you step through to lessen the hassle of getting on the plane.
3. Store (part of) your money as well as medicines and snacks in your carry-on. Keep your Passport and the rest of your money in your purse or on your person.
Martie even suggests using a Passport holder that you wear like a lanyard to ensure it’s front and center at all times. Also, she suggests that you do not take your debit card. Instead, take a credit card with a limit so that robbers can’t totally wipe out your bank account.
4. Don’t forget to stock at least part of your toiletries, makeup, and medicines in your carry-on, but make sure you adhere to TSA guidelines!
Have enough for a few days there, but don’t worry about packing items the resort will stock for you – like shampoo and body wash. Remember the TSA 3-1-1 guidelines!
5. Consider putting any other essentials you may need for the first few days of your honeymoon in your carry-on.
Keep these items either with you in your purse or inside of your carry-on.
In case you don’t know, you really do need to make sure you follow all TSA guidelines when it comes to items you’re carrying onto the plane. You also need to follow sizing guidelines for the carry-on itself! This size is generally 22” long, 14” wide, and 9” high at the max, so do yourself a favor and measure your carry-on before you hit the airport.
When it comes to booking the most important vacation of your life, why wouldn’t you trust a professional to help you before, during, and after you get back? “If something happens while on the honeymoon or if something goes wrong before or after they travel, they’ve got us in their back pocket,” Martie explains. In other words, you’ll have an expert on your side if something less-than-romantic happens surrounding such a big trip. The best part? Using Travel Leaders to help you find the perfect vacation package and honeymoon package option is completely free. You can book your honeymoon up to a year in advance and make payments on it during that time, too!
Traveling with Travel Leaders also gives you additional options you won’t have if you’re booking by yourself online.
