I told you earlier about my first five ways to save big while shopping for your wedding dress, and I just couldn’t stop myself there. Believe it or not, it is totally possible to get a designer wedding dress of your dreams at a price you can afford from your local bridal salon. No need to risk buying into the “wholesale” dresses sold by Chinese manufacturers when you’re armed with these tips! So, without further ado, here are five additional pieces of advice that can help you find the perfect wedding gown – without breaking the bank. Read on to get in-the-know!
1. Always check to see if or when the bridal salon will run special deals throughout the year that could help you save big.
Bridal salons are similar to other businesses in that they do sometimes offer “holiday” sales for their clients. Sometimes, these are considered private sales, and other times, they’re open to the public. Popular holidays for such sales include Memorial Day and Black Friday, as well as seasonal sales that run alongside big events (think prom season). This is a fabulous time to not only save on a wedding dress, but you can also reap huge savings off in-stock accessories at these bridal salons.
I actually bought all of my accessories at 50% off during a Black Friday sale at the gown shop where I purchased my wedding dress. I got my jewelry, bra and crinoline as well as a set of earrings for my maid of honor while there. My mother came with me and purchased her mother of the bride dress there that day, too. We easily saved around $500 just by fighting traffic to get there. Totally worth it!
2. Make sure you’re open to suggestions your consultant may have – even if the gown looks hideous on the hanger.
You will be surprised at how many gowns look simply ridiculous on the hanger…but look va-va-voom amazing when actually on your body. While the gown may give you pause when your bridal consultant first pulls it from the sample bag, you should keep in mind that she’s seen this same gown on a number of women with a similar figure to yours. She knows its potential, and she understands from multiple trial and errors what will look amazing on your unique physique. Trust her!
3. Keep an open mind about up-and-coming designers.
Sometimes, bridal salons contract with up-and-coming designers to feature their gowns in the store for a certain time period, at wonderful prices. This is the perfect opportunity to snag a big-time designer gown at a fraction of what the line will cost in a few years. Besides, who cares if no one’s heard of your gown’s designer (yet)? It’s not like anyone will grab you to check the label inside your dress as you’re walking down the aisle, anyway. (If they do, you probably should have rethought the guest list to begin with!)
4. Consider styles that weren’t necessarily meant to be a wedding dress. They may work fabulously for your celebration!
Many bridesmaid dresses and even prom dresses look suspiciously like wedding gowns, even if they’re displayed in a different color other than white. Generally, most gowns you’ll see in these sections can be ordered from your salon in white at no additional cost and will look gorgeous as your wedding gown of choice. (This is especially easy to do with destination beach weddings, but that’s another story for another day!) So, if you just can’t find a wedding dress with the bling or simple elegance you’re looking for within your price range, open up your options to include other “special occasion” dresses. You may be surprised at what you’ll find – and how much you’ll save by doing so!
5. Take advantage of any perks your bridal salon offers to save even more on your wedding day attire.
Most commonly, I notice bridal salons offering discounts on accessories or bridesmaid dresses to brides who purchase their wedding gown there. These discounts can save you and your bridesmaids lots of money! Other perks may include discounts on dresses for mothers of the bride and groom. Another common option you may see is an incentive for tuxedo rentals at a partner shop in colors that match the bridesmaid lines the bridal salon carries.
The bridal salon also might hold your gown for you until the big day and may even come lace you up on location for your bridal portraits and wedding. If they offer this, they likely also offer free steaming in between each wear. Either way, when you’re shopping for your wedding dress, take the perks into account – and take advantage of them!
Shopping for the perfect wedding dress can indeed be a daunting task for the modern bride-to-be. Although a million little details go into your final dress decision, it’s very important to set and keep to a bridal budget for your gown. I hope you’ll be able to apply the tips found in this mini-series to find the wedding dress of your dreams, all at the best price. Happy shopping!
