I had just accepted a new job and was going to be gone for a few weeks in training. I organized a dinner with friends to celebrate the new job when I got back. I didn’t think anything of it when Rob said, “Don’t you think you should invite your parents?” After everyone was done eating, we ordered champagne to make a toast. Rob got up and started saying a bunch of sweet things, but I still was not catching on. All of a sudden, I remember him starting to reach for his pocket, and everyone started cheering and clapping. Then he was on one knee, asking if he could take care of me for the rest of my life. I will never forget it. It was so special to share that moment with my family and friends there, especially because it was a surprise to everyone there too, except my parents, of course.
We were engaged for 10 months before the wedding! I tried to soak in everything on my wedding day! Reading Rob’s letter that morning was very special. My Dad and my bridal party seeing me in my dress and veil for the first time was also very special. I had kept the dress a secret, except my parents and grandmother new what it looked like! I teared up seeing Rob in his tuxedo at the bottom of the stairs in the Madison waiting for our first look. Talking to my Dad behind the doors at the church, right before they opened them to come down, was another special moment. Sitting with my bridal party waiting for it to be our turn and taking a moment to pray was also memorable. Other special moments include me trying to sneak a peak to watch the flower girls go down, walking down the aisle and seeing so many friends and family and our wedding party at the altar, and walking into the reception for the first time. From the flowers to the chandeliers, everything was beautiful. I loved our first dance, the dance with my Dad, and watching my parents on the dance floor having a blast. There’re just too many memories to detail! A few unexpected things included the 99% chance of rain forecast, especially for an outdoor reception! Somehow, that day, it never rained during our pictures or the reception. Our colors were champagne, blush, and a hint of mint!
The best wedding planning advice I got and hope to share with future brides is to do what makes you and your husband happy! You cannot please everyone, and trying to do that will make you go crazy. There will be special touches that are important to your mom or dad, for example, and of course, those are important. But overall, really make this day about the two of you and how you can best share such an amazing day with your family and friends, and have no regrets!
