Meet Ashley from Poppies Design Studio
“I grew up around florals and gardening as my mother has a greenhouse and landscaping business. As a little girl, age 7, I would walk around the greenhouse as she worked, studying the flowers around me and learning their names. In the shop, I loved telling customers all about the flowers and helping them find what they needed. I worked with my mother until the age of 18 and then went to college for 4 years. “
“After graduation, I moved to St. Louis and began my fresh floral career working at Baisch and Skinner, one of the largest wholesalers in the Midwest. I became a buyer for the fresh floral division and traveled the world, educating myself on how flowers were grown in all regions. I worked at Baisch and Skinner for 9 years and then purchased Poppies Design Studio, which specializes in special event floral design. My studio currently designs an estimated 100 weddings per year plus we work with many corporate clients in the St Louis area.”
What do you love most about your job?
“What I love most is that I get to make my clients’ dreams come true. Many times I have been on site building flower walls or designing installations, and the brides will express how the florals were more than they could have ever imagined. I love that feeling I get knowing I made a client smile.”
How would you define your style?
“I would describe it as East Coast meets West Coast in the Midwest. Its very organic in the sense that I use florals, greenery, textures which often include even mixing dried items into my designs.”
What is your best advice for brides as they plan their wedding day flowers?
“My best advice for brides is don’t hold back on what you want because of the budget. Florals are what will set your wedding apart from others. Think about the areas in your wedding that are going to be photographed the most; bouquets, arch or ceremony backdrop, photo backdrop, or photo wall. These are the areas you should put your budget towards and if you must, reduce in other areas. Talk with your floral designer, and they can work with you on ways to design these high impact areas.”
What are your favorite flowers to work with?
“My favorite florals to design with of course are Peonies, Garden Roses, Ranunculus, and Anemones, but I love seasonal items such as Viburnum, Lilac, Spirea, Clematis, and Dahlias as well. The seasonal items remind me of gardening with my mother, and those tend to be more organic and whimsical when designing.“
What trends are brides loving right now?
“Right now brides are loving the white and bridal blush floral tones with greenery. I feel like greenery has been used in its purest form the past few years with greens like wild smilax taking front and center stage.”
What is your most memorable wedding moment with a client?
“My most memorable wedding moment was last year when I created a beautiful white floral table runner for the Bride’s head table. It was filled with hydrangea and magnolia, with the flowers cascading down to the floor. She was in tears when she first saw it, and when we hugged, her earring got caught in my hair. So she had tears of happiness in her eyes, and yet we were laughing, stuck together until assistance came and helped us out. Since her wedding, she has had a baby girl, and I have designed floral pieces for her newborn photos as well. I love making those connections and being a part of my brides’ lives even after their wedding days.”
