Each wedding is unique and special in it’s own right, and this one in Knoxville definitely lives up to that sentiment! Jamie & Mary incorporated their love story in such a beautiful, intentional way while also pulling off a major surprise for all of their friends and family! Keep scrolling to hear the behind-the-scenes details from both brides and to fall in love with this wedding just like we did!
How did you meet?
Jamie: “Astonishingly enough, through Tinder. Our first date was at Jig & Reel.”
Mary: “We met on the dating app, Tinder! We actually chatted briefly and it quickly fizzled, and she deleted her app! She redownloaded it a month later, and we matched again. She asked, ‘how does someone get to know you?’ I had a moment of bravery, and replied with my phone number. We had our first date the following week. We met for drinks and watched her friends do karaoke. It sounds so ordinary, but I think about how special that night was often and how fondly I think of it. I fell pretty quickly!”
When did you know you were falling in love?
J: “The moment I couldn’t imagine my life without her.”
M: “It’s so hard to know when I was falling in love, because it happened so quickly. We used to tell people that we had been dating for longer than we had, because we were embarrassed about how much we cared for each other so quickly. I knew within the first month that I no longer saw a future without her.”
What is your favorite quality in your wife?
J: “Her selflessness, intelligence, and her humor are on par with the fact that she understands me – often times better than I understand myself. She’s also insanely beautiful, which helps.”
M: “Her positivity. She always helps me see the bright side of any dark moment. She makes me laugh even on my darkest days.”
Did you have a specific theme or design inspiration for your big day?
J: “We got married on Friday the 13th, with our invitations that read ‘…cast your superstitions aside.”
M: “We got married on Friday the 13th (because we began dating on a Friday the 13th)! So we wanted the colors to be dark greys, burgundy, and black to go along with the typical theme of the day.”
How about your dress or attire?
M: “I broke tradition a bit with a pink dress! I definitely wanted to have a fun dress, and pink is what felt fun for me!”
What was the most memorable moment?
J: “The surprise ceremony. I am still amazed that we pulled it off! I loved getting to express our love and commitment to one another in front of our family and close friends.”
M: “We lied to our guests/family and told them that we were getting married at the courthouse, and only inviting guests to a reception. We instead planned a surprise ceremony. Only our wedding planner, photographer, my brother, and our officiant knew. We left our family on the sidewalk and ‘drove to the courthouse’ telling them that we were only allowing our photographer to be present. Instead, with my brother as our driver, we spent about an hour taking photos around downtown Knoxville with our photographer.
Just a few minutes before our return, Holly gathered our family into the living room of the loft. My brother preceded our entrance, and announced that we hadn’t gotten married, and that we were getting married in the loft. Everyone cheered and it was just the most genuinely joyous moment. Jamie, our officiant, and I all began crying! But we pulled it together quickly and made it through the ceremony. But the moment when everyone was so genuinely excited for us was better than I could have ever imagined. It was so filled with love and support and was better than any expectation I had.”
What was your first dance song, and why did you choose it?
J: “‘I’m Yours’ by Alessia Cara. This was one of the first love songs I put on a mix cd for Mary and I think it just kind of stuck with us throughout our relationship.”
M: “When Jamie made me a mixed CD when we were dating with that as the opening track, I instantly loved it, and have related it to our relationship ever since. We wanted an upbeat song. We didn’t want to have a solo dance with everyone watching, so we invited our guests to join us for the first dance. It gave us the opportunity to really enjoy the moment without worrying about being watched (we both get embarrassed easily lol!).”
Tell us about your grand exit!
M: “We went out to bars in the old city after, and invited our guests to tag along. We didn’t want a grand exit, because we wanted to make sure everyone knew the party wasn’t over!”
We wish you the best, Mary & Jamie!
