As you start to get into the nitty-gritty of planning your wedding, you may realize you’re in a bit over your head. To help take away some of the stress, hiring a wedding planner may be in your best interest. How do you know what to look for in the person who will be helping you in your wedding planning adventure?
To learn what characteristics are desirable in a wedding planner, I had the pleasure of speaking with Memphis event planner Tonya, of Bella Sera Signature Events. As one half of this fabulous event-planning team, Tonya has some great tips for brides on the look-out for wedding planners. Read on for three traits you won’t want the person helping to plan your big day to be lacking!
1. Your wedding planner should take organization to the extreme.
Even the most on-top-of-her-game bride is bound to experience one or two mini-meltdowns before the big day. Maybe those lovely bridesmaid dresses that looked emerald online turned out to be more of a sickly avocado shade when they arrived in the store. Perhaps your well-meaning grandmother is pressuring you to add 75 more people to your already lengthy guest list.
Tonya tells us it’s very important to have an organized wedding planner by your side to prevent the little annoyances that can arise when preparing for a big event and to help take care of things when you do come across an issue. She explains that time management is key when planning a wedding, and if your planner is big into using charts and timelines – well, that’s definitely a plus!
2. Whoever you choose to help plan your big day should have fabulous communication skills.
Your wedding day is going to be filled with all different sorts of personalities – from your goofy caterer to your reserved maid of honor – and you’ll need somebody you can trust to help keep everyone and everything together.
Tonya explains that your wedding planner won’t just be talking with you and your groom during the planning and actual day. She’ll be chatting with your vendors and all the members of the bridal party too, so you’ll want to be sure she has impeccable communication skills. This person should be able to communicate effectively with all different groups of people
3. Make sure your wedding planner is able to devote enough personal attention to you.
While some brides prefer to leave the bulk of the decision-making to their wedding planners and simply show up to a beautiful event the day of their wedding, others like to be involved in every last detail of the process.
No matter what level of participation you desire in the planning of your nuptials, Tonya says that it’s essential you find a planner who is able and willing to devote as much personal attention to you as you need. After all, you’re paying for a service, and while you may have a hard time finding a wedding planner who’ll be available 24/7, you should expect who ever you hire to put you at ease and respond to your questions in a timely manner. Tonya encourages brides to connect with a wedding planner 12-15 months before the event in order to get the most out of the planning process.
