You and the love of your life have just gotten engaged and are beyond thrilled to spend the rest of your lives together! You call your family and friends to inform them of this most fabulous news and champagne is popped in your honor. Yay! So, what happens next?
Since there are so many steps involved before you actually take that treasured walk down the aisle, it can be difficult to know where to begin.
I spoke with Andrea Mervin of Townsend wedding venue The Barn Event Center of the Smokies to learn why it’s so important to pick a wedding venue as soon as possible in the wedding planning process.
1. Wedding venues book up very quickly these days!
If you have a certain date in your mind regarding the perfect day for a wedding, you may have to be flexible. Wedding venues can be booked up to two years in advance, and it’s best to reserve one as early as possible to have the best chance at getting that particular date for when you say “I do!”
Of course, the month or season you have in mind for your big day will make a difference in how quickly you’ll have to book your venue also. For example, Andrea tells us that for The Barn Event Center of the Smokies, April through June as well as September through October tend to be extremely busy times for the venue, and couples need to often book at least one year in advance in order to get their preferred date.
2. Your wedding venue’s style will set the tone for the rest of the wedding.
Whether you’re getting married in a charming rustic barn or a super swanky hotel, everything else wedding-related will most likely follow the theme of your venue. Your decorations, cake, and even your gown will be playing off the place you choose to marry, so it’s important to decide on one carefully.
Because wedding venues can become a scarce resource so quickly, Andrea encourages brides to choose one with that fits your style and personality as soon as possible in order to move on to planning more of the fun stuff – like the dress!
3. You may not be able to book the rest of your vendors until your venue is set.
Sure, you can talk to that amazing photographer with award-winning editing skills and can do a taste test of a couple (or seven) fabulously delicious cakes at the start of your wedding planning process, but you can’t really book any of them until you have your venue and date set.
Andrea explains that booking a wedding venue early on can take a lot of stress off the mind of the bride. It’s such an important piece of the wedding planning puzzle, and once you have that part settled, it’s so much easier to plan the rest of your big day. She also mentions that some venues may offer a discount for Friday or Sunday weddings. So if the thought of adding up the costs of all the vendors for your wedding is starting to make you reconsider the possibility of an elopement, check with your venue to see if they offer discounts for non-peak dates.
