Blakely & Dustin’s white and gold wedding was both elegant and romantic! As a DIY family, they came together and assmebled most of the decorations and made memories along the way! From the ice cream stand to a bridal party dance- off, keep reading for ideas that will leave you inspired!

How did you meet?

“We met at the workout facility at East Tennessee State University when we were both attending college. I was majoring in Communication Studies with a minor in Dance, and Dustin was working on his Business Degree. After a major pep talk, Dustin’s best friends convinced him he needed to come introduce himself to me. I was on the treadmill with headphones in my ears, and Dustin stood directly in front of me for what felt like a very long time. After noticing he would not go away until I talked to him, I look out my headphones and he introduced himself and he boldly asked if I would be interested in a date with him. I politely declined and he walked away. The next day, after not being able to sleep at all that night, I went to the same place we met the day before and hoped he would come up to me again. To my disappointment- he did not. All I can remember from then on is finding him, apologizing for not saying yes, and shaking as I tried to put his number in my phone. After seven years, he still gives me the same butterflies as that day.”

When did you know you were falling in love?

“Undeniably, when I was competing in the Miss Johnson City Pageant in 2014, Dustin was there to support me with both of our friends and families. Seeing how much he and his family truly supported any dream of mine made a lasting impression on us both. At that moment it was not about the crown and getting to go to Miss Tennessee, but it was having someone so amazing out in the audience loving me for any dream I have.”

What is your favorite quality in your husband/wife?

“We both have discussed that we love that we have always put God first in our lives before anything else. Dustin has such a warm and inviting humor that makes all who meet him want to be his best friend. Blakely noticeably puts the needs of others before herself. Even though an unlikely couple written down on paper, Dustin’s love for hunting and my love for teaching dance somehow brings us even closer.”

Hardest part of wedding planning?

“Not worrying about pleasing everyone. It can be hard in many aspects of life, especially weddings. “How many people to invite, what the bridesmaids should wear”. I tried to stay as true to myself as possible and I feel very blessed to have such good family and friends who worked tirelessly to make our wedding day exactly what we wanted. In the end we wanted it to be very inclusive of those we love.”

Did you have a specific theme or design inspiration for your big day?

“Candles, glam, and romantic elegance would be the inspiration. Most of the decorations were made and assembled by a member of my family and I mean it was a labor of love from everyone -parents, siblings, aunts, uncles, and cousins. As a “do it yourself” family it was very fun to be together and make memories in the process. Along the way, we wanted our guests to be entertained the entire time. While we were taking pictures the guests enjoyed food and games emceed by the DJ where they won gift cards provided, our engagement video, and a funny video featuring us as the soon to be newlyweds about how well we really know one another. Not to mention, they enjoyed the ice cream stand we had organized with six of our favorite flavors of ice cream. We love our sweets! We also wanted to make sure it was a Christ centered ceremony. We had the honor of having three people that mean a lot to us both (our best friend Gracie, her sister Sarah, and Dustin’s sister Cidney) sing along with a live string trio of two violins and a cello to a custom arrangement of our two favorite Christian songs ” You Make Me Brave and Oceans”.”

How about your dress or attire?

“My dress was a custom one of a kind, elegant, and hand beaded Martina Liana. I had no expectations going into finding the perfect dress. But when I tried this one on, I knew it was the one. It had some additions I wanted added to it, but with the help of the alteration staff and my mother, it came out to be perfect. My mother added additions to the sleeve detail and put a piece of her bouquet from her wedding into my bouquet. My aunt and cousin offered “something borrowed” by letting me wear my late grandmothers wedding set as well. We wanted elegant colors for the groomsmen and bridal party. We went with a champagne gold color for the dresses and matching ties and vests for the men..”

What was the most memorable moment?

“We went back and forth as to whether we should do a first look or not. We decided that we should after all, and we are so glad we did. We made it very private with just us and the photographers. We had dreamed of this day for so many years, and due to an unforeseen health issue for me, we had previously discussed that we might have to push back the wedding. So many emotions surrounded us both during that moment we turned around and got to embrace one another for the first time on our wedding day. We thanked God out loud for the glory and healing he had given us to be able to stand there and have that moment together.”

What was your first dance song, and why did you choose it?

“We had the privileged of each choosing a song for our first dance. Dustin chose “Take my Hand” and I chose ” I Get to Love You.” These flowed beautifully because the one he chose is about a man to his wife and how the journey has mad him who he is, and the one I chose is about a wife getting to love her husband for the rest of her life. The guests stood as we took our first dance as husband and wife knowing that our love was and always will be genuine from the bottom of our hearts. After the first dance, the bridesmaids and groomsman presented a bridal party dance that had everyone up clapping their hands and laughing until they cried. Some of the songs included in the dance off were ” Men in Black”, and ” I Feel Like a Woman.”.”

Tell us about your grand exit!

“We could not believe the wedding was over! Exiting to “I’m on Top of the World” , there were bubbles flying and sparklers lighting the way as we ran through our guests lined up along the path to our “get away” car, a red 1962 Corvair that was apart of my Uncle’s lovely vintage car collection. We drove that night to Knoxville, and the next morning we arrived in St. Lucia for a dream Honeymoon.”

Congratulations again Blakely & Dustin!
